What Is the Gospel?
The word "gospel" means "good news." In a world full of division, hatred, and chaos, the gospel of Jesus Christ brings us good news! The Gospel is the Bible teaching of the death, burial, and resurrection of Christ as a substitutionary sacrifice for our sin. The following truths are helpful in understanding the gospel.
Realize God Loves You
- John 3:16 "For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life."
- 1 John 4:7-10 "Beloved, let us love one another: for love is of God; and every one that loveth is born of God, and knoweth God. He that loveth not knoweth not God, for God is love. In this was manifested the love of God toward us, because that God sent his only begotten Son into the world, that we might live through him. Herein is love, not that we loved God, but that he loved us, and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins."
Many people in our world are searching for love and acceptance. God not only loves the whole world, the Bible says He IS love! God desires a personal relationship with each person. God made a way for us to have that restored relationship with Him, while also providing salvation from death and hell, as well as a way to Heaven! What a loving God!
Realize You Are a Sinner
- Romans 3:10 "As it is written, there is none righteous, no not one."
- Romans 3:23 "For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God."
God's Word reminds us that we all have sinned. The word sin means to miss the mark, or to come short of perfection, by disobeying God. We sin by choosing to do wrong. At one time or another, we have all chosen to disobey God
Realize There Is a Punishment for Sin
- Romans 6:23 "For the wages (earned payment) of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord."
- Isaiah 59:2 "But your iniquities have separated between you and your God, and your sins have hid his face from you, that he will not hear."
- John 3:36 "He that believeth not the Son shall not see life; but the wrath of God abideth on him."
- Revelation 20:14 "And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death."
- Revelation 21:8 "But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone, which is the second death."
Just as wrongdoing in our society or in our home has consequences, so does sin. Sin separates us from God. After Adam sinned in the garden of Eden, every person was born with a broken relationship with God (Romans 5:12). If that relationship is not restored, the separation becomes permanent. Sin's penalty is death. Though we will all physically die someday, the death in these passages is talking about an second death, an eternal, spiritual death in the lake of fire.
Realize Jesus Paid the Penalty For You
- Romans 5:8 "But God commendeth (proved) his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us."
- 1 Corinthians 15:3-4 "For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures:"
God proved his love for you by giving his only Son, Jesus Christ, to die on the cross for your sin. Jesus died in your place and paid your penalty. Christ's sacrificial death on the cross was the full payment for your sin. Not only did Jesus die on the cross for you, but he was buried and rose again three days later.
Realize You Need to Believe on Jesus Today
- Romans 10:9 "That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved."
- Romans 10:13 "For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved."
If you would like to receive Jesus Christ as your Saviour, you can place your faith and trust in him right now. To believe on Jesus Christ as Saviour means to have faith that he died for you, paid the price for your sin, and is the only way to heaven. Believing is not merely acknowledging that Jesus existed or that he was a good example. Believing is trusting in Jesus Christ alone for forgiveness of your sin and for eternal life.
Pray Sincerely...
You can express your faith and trust in Jesus by praying to Him. "Dear Jesus, I know that I am a sinner, and that I deserve hell. I believe you died on the cross, paid the penalty for my sin, and arose from the dead three days later. I am placing my faith and trust in you alone to forgive my sin and give me the free gift of eternal life. Thank you for saving me. Amen."
Assurance
The assurance that you have eternal life and a restored relationship with God is base on God's unchanging Word. The Bible provides this assurance to those who believe in Him.
- John 3:16 "For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life."
God does not lie. He has promised everlasting life to those who believe on him as Saviour.
- Titus 1:2 "In hope of eternal life, which God, that cannot lie, promised before the world began."
- Acts 16:31 "...Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved, and thy house."
Questions?
Q: What about my good works?
A: The Bible definitely teaches that we should do good, love one another, etc. But good works is not a Bible way of salvation. In fact, it's quite the opposite! When we compare our "goodness" with our Holy God, it doesn't measure up. Isaiah 64:6 "...all our righteousnesses are as filthy rags..." All our goodness could never undo or pay for the sin we have in our lives. The Bible teaches that the only way to Heaven is through faith in Jesus Christ. Ephesians 2:8-9 "For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast." John 14:6 "Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me."
Q: Do I need to join your church to be saved?
A: Church membership is not a requirement for salvation. The Bible does clearly teach about the need for a Christian to be surrounded by fellow believers, for encouragement, for accountability, for examples, and for prayer. We would love to have you come and be a part of our church family!
Q: I was baptized as a baby. Does that mean I'm saved?
A: Infant baptism is not found anywhere in the Bible. Baptism in the Bible shows an identification with Christ in His death, burial, and resurrection. It is a public display and acknowledgement of the personal decision to accept Christ as Saviour. In believers, baptism should happen after a salvation decision has been made.
Did you make the decision to trust Christ as your Saviour today?
We would love to meet you and help you get connected with the body of Christ.
