Feeding on the Words of God
“Thy words were found, and I did eat them…” ~ Jeremiah 15:16a
Seven years ago I began my fitness journey when I started training with Sam. I was clearly not in good health, and my strength and stamina were almost non-existent. I remember those early days when I felt like I would never make it through a one hour session. Sam could clearly see that I had no energy or endurance, and he asked me one day what I had eaten for breakfast. I truthfully told him that all I had consumed was a single cup of coffee. Without hesitation he responded, “That is your entire problem right there!” You cannot function on an empty stomach any more than your car can run on an empty tank!” Although that is just one of many lessons I have learned from him, it is one that I put into practice right away and the difference it made has been amazing!
On a spiritual level the same principle is true and it is even more important! As a believer, we cannot endure the spiritual trials and warfare of life if we are running on empty. Our spiritual fuel is the Word of God! Job stated, “I have esteemed the words of his mouth more than my necessary food!” Jeremiah tells us that he “ate” the Words of God, meaning that he read, studied, memorized, and meditated upon them until they became a part of him!
Later, in Jeremiah 20, during a time of deep discouragement, when Jeremiah felt like quitting, it was those very Words of God that kept him going! “But his word was in mine heart as a burning fire shut up in my bones…” (Jeremiah 20:9b)
Let us learn to keep our hearts filled with the Words of God so that we are never running on empty!
