The Cure for Darkness
“The people which sat in darkness saw great light; and to them which sat in the region and shadow of death light is sprung up.” ~ Matthew 4:16
After His baptism, Jesus was led of the Spirit into the wilderness where He was tempted of the devil for 40 days and nights. He emerged victorious and moved to Capernaum, located on the northwest shores of the Sea of Galilee from where He began his public ministry. As Matthew narrated his Gospel, he remarked on this event with a quote from the prophet Isaiah. “The people which sat in darkness saw great light”!
Years ago, I went cave exploring at Laurel Caverns in southwestern Pennsylvania. Rather than take the tourist route, my group and I chose what was called the “exploratory”. There were no paved paths and bright lights. After a lengthy crawl through a narrow gap in the rock, we found ourselves in the vast underground depths of the caverns. We were told that if anything should happen and our flashlights should fail that the only thing to do was to sit still until help arrived. I remember how we turned off our flashlights and the intense darkness of the cave enveloped us. It was darkness, unlike anything I had ever experienced! It is impossible to put it into words! I understood why we were told to just sit and wait for rescue if we lost our lights.
When Jesus came, He came to a world steeped in the darkness of sin and despair. It was a world that was lost unless someone came to the rescue. And so, mankind sat in the depths of darkness until that one blessed night when a new star blazed in the night sky announcing that the Light of the world had come! And with that light the darkness was banished!
The only cure for darkness is light! Jesus is the light of the world, and He has imparted that light into each of us. Let us make it our goal, especially at this Christmas Season, to share that light with those who are still sitting in darkness!
