Have You Planted Your Mustard Seed?
“And the Lord said, If ye had faith as a grain of mustard seed, ye might say unto this sycamine tree, Be thou plucked up by the root, and be thou planted in the sea; and it should obey you.” ~ Matthew 17:20
Jesus’ statement about having faith as a grain of mustard seed is well known to most of us. It carries a powerful promise that even that small amount of faith can accomplish great, seemingly impossible things. I don’t know about you, but there are times when it seems like my faith is not much bigger than that little mustard seed, so a promise like this is especially precious to me!
But there is an aspect to this teaching that we must not forget. In order for the mustard seed to accomplish great things, it must be planted! “It is like a grain of mustard seed, which a man took, and cast into his garden; and it grew, and waxed a great tree; and the fowls of the air lodged in the branches of it.” (Luke 13:19). If we do not take that little bit of faith and exercise it by putting it into practice, it will never grow into anything but a seed!
As a new Christian, I learned about soul winning and sharing my faith. I did not know much about the Bible other than how to be saved. I was not polished or practiced, but despite my “fear and trembling”, I began to share my faith and lo, and behold I began to see people get saved. I planted my little bit of faith by passing out some tracts, knocking on some doors, inviting some friends to church and over the years hundreds of people have been saved.
If we do not plant our little bit of faith in obedience to God’s Word it is not much more than wishful thinking and will lack the incredible power that God has promised.
Have you planted your mustard seed yet?
