Running on Empty
“For which cause we faint not; but though our outward man perish, yet the inward man is renewed day by day.” ~ 2 Corinthians 4:16
Two and a half years ago, after much prayer and research, I decided to purchase a hybrid car. I knew the make, model, and even the color that I wanted. I was looking for a car that would get phenomenal mileage, have a great warranty, and a high satisfaction rating. I went to the dealership and lo and behold, they had one car on the lot that met my predetermined criteria! In addition, it had heated and cooled seats, a sunroof, and electric everything! They put a temporary plate on the car so I could take my test drive but just as I started the engine, lights began flashing and alarms began to sound. The car was completely out of gas! Someone had forgotten to check that important detail! Fortunately, because it was a hybrid, the EV kicked in and we were able to drive it to a nearby gas station and get it filled up. Despite all the bells and whistles, that car was not going to go very far without a refill!
In 2 Corinthians 4, Paul details the trials, troubles, and heavy responsibilities that he carried on his shoulders. Just a fraction of those things would be enough to wear any one person down and out. But Paul was far from being overwhelmed by his difficulties because he had learned the secret of making sure that his spiritual tank was refueled every single day.
It is more important to refill our “inner man” than we realize! Far too many Christians are running on empty yet still trying to handle the struggles of life. Without that daily renewal, we are doomed to find ourselves stranded and powerless!
Beware the danger of “running on empty”!
