“We have heard with our ears, O God, our fathers have told us, what work thou didst in their days, in the times of old.” ~ Psalm 44:1 

My wife’s grandfather lived to the age of 103! Up until the final two years of his life, his mind was as sharp as ever. When we visited with him, he would share stories from the 1920’s and 30’s as if they only happened yesterday. He lived an incredible life and could relate matters of the family history with amazing detail. He was passionate that the next generations should remember those who had gone before them. 

In Psalm 44:1, we read a powerful testimony of not one, but two generations. First, there was the generation of the “fathers” who had seen God do so many mighty works. Second, there was the generation of the sons who received a heritage of godliness from those fathers! What a blessed combination! 

There is a challenge in this verse for the fathers to live for God, to walk in His ways, to cherish His Words & Works so that we might be able to testify of the goodness and greatness of our God to our children! There is also a challenge for the children to cherish a godly heritage, to emulate the faith of our fathers, and to live in such a way that one day we too might be able to pass on a godly testimony! 

It is my prayer that I will live for God in such a way that my children will one day be able to quote Psalm 44:1 as their own testimony!
