“I will praise thee; for I am fearfully and wonderfully made: marvellous are thy works; and that my soul knoweth right well.” ~ Psalm 139:14 

When I was 18 years old, home for the summer after my first year in Bible College, my friend, Jeff Arthurs, asked me what I wanted to be. I quickly named off some of the great preachers I had heard of and said, “I want to be like them!” Jeff quickly responded with the question, “Why don’t you just try to be the best Tom Bish you can be?” I did not answer him, out loud, but in my mind, I said, “Because I don’t like Tom Bish!” As if he could read my thoughts, Jeff then said, “You know, Tom, God does not make junk!”  

It was a blessed day for me when I came to the realization that God made me, just as I am, and for a very special purpose. That was the basis for David’s praise in Psalm 139:14! There was a time in David’s life when no one saw any potential in him! And David was not alone in that situation. Moses struggled with a speech impediment, Gideon with poverty, and Jeremiah with lack of talent. But each man found out that God had a special plan for their lives, and each went on to be greatly used and blessed by the Lord! 

Although we all have room to grow and mature in Christ, may we not waste another moment wishing that we were someone other than the person God made us to be! We are fearfully and wonderfully made by the hands of the Creator of the Universe. May we learn to trust His wisdom and plan for our lives!
