Jesus Himself Drew Near
"Jesus himself drew near, and went with them. But their eyes were holden that they should not know him.” ~ Luke 24:15-16
It was a Sunday, unlike any Sunday in history! News of the Resurrection of Jesus had made its way to the disciples via the women who had visited His tomb. The disciples should have been thrilled, but sadly their fear had clouded their faith. As those women excitedly shared the words of the angel, the disciples dismissed them as idle tales.
In spite of their doubts, Peter and John ran to the tomb and found it open and empty just as they had been told, but they left, still floundering in unbelief. Two other disciples traveled away from Jerusalem altogether on a 7 ½ mile trip to Emmaus. Their faces were downcast, and their words were filled with sorrow and confusion. It was then that the risen Savior drew near.
His voice sounded familiar and when He spoke their hearts burned with holy passion; yet their unwillingness to believe clouded their vision. Imagine having the Living, Risen Savior at your side but not even being aware of His presence! We may chide those two disciples, but how often do we spend our days in discouragement and doubt even though we have the abiding presence of the same Risen Savior! “For He hath said, I will never leave thee nor forsake thee!”
May the Lord grant us a new vision of His presence with us. We serve a Risen Savior! Hallelujah!
