Quicken Thou Me
"My soul cleaveth unto the dust: quicken thou me according to thy word.” ~ Psalm 119:25
In Genesis 2:7, we read that when God created man, He created him from the dust of the ground. In Genesis 3:19, we read that after Adam had sinned God told him that he would return to the dust. Scientists tell us that the average handful of dust contains the same elements that make up the human body. Man has an interesting relationship to the dust.
In Psalm 119:25, David was not necessarily talking about literal dust/dirt: he was referring the things of this world. The desire for pleasure, prosperity, and power are things that we all deal with to one degree or another. But in the eternal scheme of things, those desires have all the value of dust because when this life is over, none of those things will go with us into eternity.
David struggled with those desires and openly admitted them before the Lord. That is why he also honestly and humbly asked the Lord to “quicken him”. That word means “to revive” or “to bring to life”.
Like you, I pray for many things in the course of any given day. I am admonished by this verse to add David’s prayer for quickening to my own prayer list! Like David, I have an affinity for “the dust” so I need God to help me develop a wiser affinity for spiritual things!
