The Importance of Praying for Spiritual Needs
Colossians 1:9-11 says, “For this cause we also, since the day we heard it, do not cease to pray for you, and to desire that ye might be filled with the knowledge of his will in all wisdom and spiritual understanding; That ye might walk worthy of the Lord unto all pleasing, being fruitful in every good work, and increasing in the knowledge of God; Strengthened with all might, according to his glorious power, unto all patience and longsuffering with joyfulness;”
In this time of physical illness and health struggles, we must be reminded to pray one for another. But though we should pray for the physical needs of others, Paul’s encouragement to the Colossians reminds us that we must also pray for the spiritual needs of others.
Paul prayed that they would be filled with knowledge, wisdom, and understanding. He prayed that they would live in such a way that would please the Lord; he prayed for spiritual fruitfulness. He prayed that they would grow in spiritual strength, patience, longsuffering and joy.
Trials will come and go in our lives. Some of them will be physical situations, such as illness, financial struggles, or relationship issues. But if we are growing in the same areas Paul desired to see the Colossians grow, we will be able to go through those trials with grace and peace. Spiritual growth and fruit does not mean there will be no testing or trials. In fact, growth often requires testing.
Let us make sure to pray one for another, but not just for the outward, physical needs.
Let us pray for one another, that God would help us to grow spiritually, that we might be able to stand in those trials and tests, trusting and praising God. Let’s not be so focused on the physical needs that we forget to understand the importance of spiritual needs and growth as well.
