The Faces in Heaven
“Not because I desire a gift: but I desire fruit that may abound to your account.” ~ Philippians 4:17
I was preaching in a distant state a few years ago when a lady approached me and introduced herself. She told me that she had been praying for me for several years because her pastor, a friend of mine, had shared some of our trials with the church she attended. As humbled as I was to hear this, it was her next words that have stayed with me. She said, “It is so good to finally put a face to my prayers!
When Paul closed his wonderful letter to the Christians of Philippi, he thanked them for their legacy of generous financial support. According to 2 Corinthians 8, this was one of the poor churches of Macedonia, yet their love for the Lord motivated them to give what they could to the work of the Gospel. As Paul thanked them, he reminded them that their giving resulted in “fruit that may abound to your account”.
During preparations for Missions Conference earlier this week, I was selecting pictures to put on display. They were but random photos of people from various parts of the world, but they are representative of the people to whom we send our missionaries. The thought then struck me that we often focus on the missionaries, for it is their faces that we see in our services. But the missionaries are not the fruit of our giving and prayers. The people they reach with the Gospel are the fruit! It is their faces that we will see in Heaven and with whom we will worship our Savior for all eternity!
How wonderful it will be when we all get to Heaven to finally be able to put a face to our giving! In fact, it will be hundreds of thousands of faces! What a day that will be!
